Vou-Loch is the largest settlement on Orc Island by population, though it lacks the prestige of nearby Vou-Rock. Where Vou-Rock is sacred, ceremonial, and political, Vou-Loch is practical, sprawling, muddy, loud, and alive.
It is the place where most of the island’s trade, labor, mustering, animal handling, and day-to-day survival actually happen.
Vou-Loch is built near low water, jungle marsh, and rough clearings. It is a settlement of timber platforms, mud roads, drying racks, hide tents, smithing sheds, butcher yards, clan barracks, and beast corrals. Smoke hangs low over the settlement, and drums from Vou-Rock can often be heard in the distance.
Many outsiders mistake Vou-Loch for a poor cousin of the capital. Orcs know better. Vou-Loch feeds the capital, arms its warriors, houses its laborers, and receives most of the island’s visitors who are not important enough to be escorted directly to Vou-Rock.
Vou-Loch has a larger overall population than Vou-Rock. It contains clan families, laborers, hunters, smiths, beast-handlers, traders, prisoners, foreign merchants, young warriors, and those temporarily exiled from clan quarters in the capital.
It is also where mixed-clan crews form before expeditions into the Forest of the Fallen.
Vou-Loch is governed by a rotating council of clan bosses known as the Mud Ring. Each High Clan sends a representative, but unlike the formal Circle of Warlords in Vou-Rock, the Mud Ring is more concerned with practical matters:
The Mud Ring is infamous for shouting matches, but its decisions tend to be efficient.
| The Beast Yards | A vast sprawl of pens, cages, pits, and fenced clearings where dinosaurs and other jungle beasts are kept, trained, broken, healed, butchered, or prepared for the Coliseum |
|---|---|
| The Red Market | The primary market of Vou-Loch. Meat, hides, weapons, tools, foreign goods, medicinal herbs, poisons, charms, and stolen goods can all be found here |
| The Mud Ring Hall | A low, heavy structure where clan bosses meet. Its floor is packed earth, and its walls are covered with old claw marks from disputes that nearly became fatal |
| The Trial Roads | A series of rough paths leading from Vou-Loch into the Forest of the Fallen. Young warriors, hunters, criminals, and adventurers often begin their jungle trials here |
| The Foreign Pens | A guarded district where visiting merchants and outsiders are expected to remain unless escorted. Conditions are not luxurious, but they are safer than wandering the settlement alone |
Vou-Loch is less formal than Vou-Rock. It is full of gambling, boasts, tavern brawls, beast auctions, impromptu contests, and practical work. A warrior may win fame in Vou-Rock, but they are usually tested first in Vou-Loch.
