Overview

Caribdys was a legendary sea monster of the The Corsair Seas, remembered as a devouring horror of whirlpools, freezing currents, and impossible hunger. It was living horror: a living maelstrom that haunted the water strait near the Watch Fort, threatening trade, naval travel, and the fragile order of the Chartist and Corsair powers.

Caribdys was believed to serve the minor god Icengrim, Lord of Winter and Undead, and that it was commanded by the champion of the Lord of the Long Night and agent of the Triad: Syclla.

Caribdys was eventually slain by the crew of The Emerald Wake, acting on behalf of The Coin Lords.

Description

Caribdys was rarely seen in full. Most witnesses described the monster not as a creature, but as an event.

Its approach began with a sudden stillness in the air. Waves would flatten. Birds would flee. Then the sea would begin to turn.

The first sign of Caribdys was a broad circular current, wide enough to draw in small craft before their crews understood the danger. As the whirlpool deepened, fragments of wreckage, broken bones, and old anchors would rise and circle the vortex like offerings around a drain. In the center, beneath the foam, sailors sometimes glimpsed a vast pale mouth, ringed with jagged teeth and rimed with black ice.

Some accounts claim Caribdys possessed a body somewhere beneath the sea floor, a swollen and ancient thing lodged in a deep trench. Others insist it was less a beast than a divine curse given hunger and shape.

Service to Icengrim

Caribdys was widely believed to be a servant or favored horror of Icengrim. Unlike Icengrim’s more familiar servants among winter undead, frost giants, or savage dead, Caribdys represented a colder and more primordial aspect of the god: the merciless hunger of the deep, the drowning cold, and the death that waits below black water.

Priests of Icengrim and Triad-aligned cultists may have regarded Caribdys as a sacred terror, a divine beast placed to punish the proud ships of the Corsair Seas.

Death of Caribdys

Caribdys most famously haunted the narrow waters near the Watch Fort, where several islands and channels create a dangerous natural choke point. The monster’s presence there gave it enormous strategic importance. The Champion of Icengrim, Syclla, managed to trap a large portion of the Chainbreaker Fleet in the straight by freezing the northern end of the straight with the Orb of Everwinter. Caribdys slowly moved up the from the southern end of the straight, forcing a confrontation.

Caribdys was slain by the crew of The Emerald Wake, operating on behalf of the The Coin Lords. The Emerald Wake raced ahead to face the creature before it could trap the broader fleet.

Knowing that conventional ship weapons would be nearly useless against a creature that fought from beneath the water and used the sea itself as a shield, the Emerald Wake’s crew devised a desperate plan. They prepared enhanced smokepowder barrels, reinforced and alchemically treated to remote detonate via magical trigger by Zhao Jin and Zhao Jun.

The plan required the Emerald Wake to draw close enough to Caribdys to be taken by the outer pull of the whirlpool without being swallowed outright. Once committed, there could be no clean retreat.

As Caribdys opened its vast maw beneath the ship, the crew released the enhanced barrels into the churning center of the vortex. Some accounts claim the barrels were chained together. Others claim volunteers rode them down into the maelstrom and escaped by magic, luck, or divine favor. The most common version says that Captain Bonzu gave the order at the last possible moment, trusting the crew and the ship to hold together long enough for the trap to work.

The barrels were drawn into Caribdys.

Then they detonated.

The explosion tore through the creature from the inside out. Witnesses described a column of steam, blood, black ice, and broken teeth erupting from the strait. The whirlpool collapsed in on itself, sending waves crashing against the nearby islands and the stones of the Watch Fort.

When the waters finally settled, Caribdys was dead.

Aftermath

The death of Caribdys was celebrated by merchants, sailors, and naval powers throughout the Corsair Seas. Trade through the Watch Fort Strait became safer, though not entirely safe. For months afterward, strange remains washed ashore: pale flesh like whale blubber, teeth longer than spears, frozen organs that refused to thaw, and shards of blackened bone veined with blue ice.

Some fragments were taken by scholars, alchemists, priests, and trophy hunters. Others were quietly burned or cast back into the sea.

The Coin Lords officially credited the crew of the Emerald Wake with the kill, though private accounts suggest the victory was far closer than public proclamations admitted.

Legacy

Caribdys remains one of the great monster-slaying tales of the modern Corsair Seas. Its death proved that even divine horrors could be killed by mortal ingenuity, courage, and sufficient quantities of smokepowder.

Among sailors, “feeding the barrels to Caribdys” has become a phrase meaning to solve an impossible problem with a reckless but brilliant plan.

Among followers of Icengrim, however, the death of Caribdys may be remembered as an insult. Some whisper that the creature was not destroyed completely, and that something of its hunger still coils in the cold trenches beneath the strait.
