Overview

Scarlet Glen is a small hamlet hidden within the deep paths of the Wyrmwood Forest. Though it has only a handful of permanent residents, the Glen holds religious and historical importance far beyond its size. It is remembered as the mortal hometown of the Scarlet Rogue, before he entered the Tower of Ascension and ascended during the first great challenge of the Tower.

Unlike grand cathedrals or fortified pilgrimage towns, Scarlet Glen remains deliberately modest. Its shrines are small, its paths are narrow, and its holy places are often disguised as cottages, root cellars, old wells, or red-painted waystones. This suits the nature of the Scarlet Rogue, whose temples and shrines tend to be smaller, hidden, and known best to thieves, smugglers, merchants, pirates, and those who live by wit rather than open force.

History

Hometown of the Scarlet Rogue

Local tradition holds that the Scarlet Rogue was born, raised, or at least first made infamous in Scarlet Glen. Most stories disagree on the exact details. Some claim he was a brilliant village thief, others a half-devil wanderer who used the Glen as his first refuge, and still others insist that the hamlet itself helped teach him the virtues of secrecy, escape, illusion, and hidden doors.

After his ascension, Scarlet Glen became a holy site. Pilgrims began arriving in small numbers, often traveling alone or in quiet pairs rather than in great processions. Offerings are usually practical: coins, lockpicks, red cloth, old daggers, or gold taken from a successful scheme.

The Circle's Attempted Isolation

During the reign of Queen Katarina of The'Rune, the Circle of the Eight attempted to cut Scarlet Glen off from the wider world through magic. The working was not a simple wall or siege. Later accounts describe folding paths, vanishing roads, false clearings, repeating trails, and forest shadows that turned travelers back before they ever saw the hamlet.

The Circle's purpose is still debated. Some believe Katarina's agents hoped to deny the Scarlet Rogue's faithful access to one of their oldest holy places. Others believe the Circle sought relics, hidden shrines, or divine echoes left behind from the Scarlet Rogue's mortal life. A darker theory claims that the Circle intended to seal the Glen away permanently, then corrupt it in secret.

The plan was foiled by the adventurers remembered as the Foamy Four. Their intervention broke the isolation magic before it could become permanent, preserving Scarlet Glen's place in the world and preventing the Circle from claiming one of the Scarlet Rogue's most sacred mortal sites.

Current Settlement

Scarlet Glen remains small by choice and circumstance. Most permanent residents are shrine-keepers, hunters, herbalists, retired rogues, discreet merchants, and families who have lived there for generations. The hamlet has no formal walls and no large militia, but strangers are noticed quickly. Every porch has a sightline. Every path has a witness. Every local child knows at least three ways to vanish into the trees.

Pilgrims come quietly throughout the year, with the greatest number arriving near Ascension Day. Respectable pilgrims may pray for luck, cleverness, or escape from danger. Less respectable visitors may seek blessings before smuggling runs, thefts, private revenge, or dangerous bargains. The residents tolerate such visitors, but they do not tolerate reckless violence within the Glen.
