Overview

High Stone is an ancient infernal fortress hidden upon a remote island in the waters surrounding Dawnwake Isle. It does not appear on ordinary maps, resist discovery through a conventional illusion, or occupy space in an entirely natural manner. The structure exists as a structured absence: a place that reality itself has been instructed not to acknowledge.

High Stone is built around authority rather than simple defense. Its doors, guardians, seals, and inner chambers do not merely ask whether an intruder is powerful enough to survive. They examine whether that person possesses recognized standing, whether their claims carry weight, and whether they are entitled to issue commands within an older infernal order.

The first known expedition from Veilmoor reached the Claimant's Bier and saw the Sigil beyond the final seal. The New Founders refused to pay the life demanded by the mechanism and returned home with knowledge rather than the artifact.

Veyda Morvayne summarized the site's nature before the expedition:

“High Stone is not on the map. It is the reason the map lies.”

Nature and Concealment

High Stone stands where Hell and the mortal world press against one another without fully joining. Veyda has described the location as a seam, a pressure scar, and a lawful blind spot. Its concealment appears to be part of the same infernal system that governs entry, standing, and claim.

The island surrounding the fortress appears harsh but unremarkable: dark cliffs, scrub, gulls, and mist, with no visible tower or gate. As vessels draw closer, however, the natural world begins behaving incorrectly:

  • compasses hesitate or disagree;
  • waves break at impossible angles;
  • tides pull toward the cliff rather than around it;
  • shadows extend farther than their sources permit;
  • iron becomes unnaturally cold;
  • observers remember or describe the coastline differently;
  • spray, ropes, and barnacles interact with walls that cannot be seen.

Divination does not reveal an invisible fortress. It reveals an omission with shape and rules. High Stone has not simply been hidden from sight; the surrounding world has been made to behave as though the structure should not be noticed.

Discovery

After the Night of Ash and the beginning of Veilmoor's reconstruction, Lady Veyda Morvayne withdrew from ordinary civic rule and returned her attention to the most dangerous parts of Professor Keilious Reverez's surviving research.

For two years she compared:

  • Keilious's notes and infernal studies;
  • maritime records from the Tradewind Sea;
  • planar disturbances surrounding Dawnwake Isle;
  • observations from the Green Hell;
  • patterns of infernal geometry;
  • locations where maps, distances, and magical detection behaved incorrectly.

The resulting coordinates did not identify a visible island fortress. They mapped the distortions surrounding something that refused to be mapped. Veyda identified the destination as High Stone and sent Veilmoor's New Founders to locate it.

The First Expedition

The New Founders Depart

The first known expedition consisted of:

  • Simmer, also known as Sir Cassian Everfrost;
  • Galix Thorne, High Mage and master of Anwar Point;
  • Ashe Whisperwind, Warden of the Wyld and leader of the Edge;
  • Ghustil Vra'ket Taal, the Still Hand's central civic authority in Veilmoor.

They sailed aboard the Boom n' Barter and the Widow's Tally. Captain Durgrim Ironarm commanded the Boom n' Barter with his customary force, while Captain Elsin Varr commanded the Widow's Tally with quieter discipline.

The departure marked an important change in Veilmoor's relationship with its leaders. Dockworkers, merchants, clerks, children, and survivors gathered at the harbor to watch them sail. There was no formal parade. The raised hands, shouted blessings, nervous jokes, and worried faces instead showed that the city now noticed when its founders left—and expected them to return.

The Rescue of the Honeywake

During the voyage, the two ships entered a violent storm and discovered the merchant vessel Honeywake under attack by three Thunder Trolls. Its cargo included lamp oil, canvas, rope, citrus, medicine, cooking oil, seed stock, tools, linen, wine, and alchemical storm-glass intended for Veilmoor.

The cargo was not a legendary treasure. It was the collection of ordinary necessities upon which a recovering city depended. The New Founders intervened, saved the Honeywake, and continued toward High Stone.

Approach and Recognition

The expedition's coordinates ended at an apparently blank cliff face. Investigation revealed the structured absence, but discovery alone did not grant entry. High Stone distinguished between approaching a place, being physically present, possessing standing, and holding a recognized claim.

The principle was inscribed upon the fortress's basalt doors:

APPROACH IS NOT ARRIVAL.

PRESENCE IS NOT STANDING.

DECLARE AUTHORITY OR BE DENIED.

The New Founders could reach the doors, but could not simply command them to open. Personal power, civic accomplishments, familiar titles, and Veyda's authority were not automatically binding within the fortress. High Stone required its own system to recognize the expedition's claims.

This made the journey a test of Veilmoor's developing legitimacy. Simmer, Galix, Ashe, and Vra'ket had become important because the city treated them as authorities. High Stone asked whether that local authority possessed weight within a far older structure.

The Infernal Viscount addressed Ashe as “Ashe of Paleview.” The meaning and extent of that title remain unknown, but its use suggests that High Stone recognized more than his ownership of Timber's Edge. It perceived a territorial claim built through roads protected, people settled, dangers uncovered, and a frontier made answerable to him.

Vra'ket's presence was also significant. He arrived after Veilmoor's first crisis and did not share every sacrifice of the original Founders, yet High Stone tested him alongside the others. His inclusion suggests that the fortress can recognize authority earned through reconstruction and public service, not only conquest or inheritance.

Defenses and Inner Chambers

Feature Known Function Unresolved Question
Structured Absence Prevents the fortress from being acknowledged through normal maps, sight, and magical detection. Who imposed the omission, and what other places may be hidden by the same method?
Chain Eels Iron guardians that rise from the surf and attack anchors, ships, lines, and those attempting to reach the concealed platform. Are they constructs, bound infernal creatures, or extensions of High Stone's jurisdiction?
Basalt Doors Deny entry until an approaching party declares authority recognized by the system. What claims, titles, precedents, or witnesses can create valid standing?
First and Second Seals Test and restrict progress through the fortress. Were the seals built to exclude intruders, identify successors, or conduct a formal hearing?
Infernal Heralds React to titles, declarations, and recognized authority within the complex. Whose judgments do the Heralds announce or enforce?
Bell Chamber Carries recognition beyond the chamber toward distant and unseen places. What heard the bell when the New Founders caused it to toll?
Claimant's Bier Opens the final seal only when a willing claimant surrenders their life. Is sacrifice the only valid procedure, and what does death legally establish?
Final Seal Protects the Sigil associated with the unknown Marquess. Does the seal imprison the Sigil, preserve it, or prevent an unworthy succession?

The Chain Eels

When High Stone awakened, iron Chain Eels rose from beneath the sea. Their black metal bodies moved through the water along boundaries that appeared legal as much as physical. They struck at the expedition's ships, anchors, ropes, and routes of approach, enforcing the distinction between reaching the island and possessing permission to arrive.

The Chain Eels appear to be the fortress's outermost active defense, but their exact nature is uncertain. They may be infernal constructs, bound creatures, or mobile expressions of the same authority encoded into High Stone's architecture.

The First and Second Seals

Beyond the basalt entrance waited the First and Second Seals. The surviving account does not reduce these obstacles to locks or magical wards. They formed part of a larger procedure through which High Stone measured the expedition's declared authority.

Each advance made the founders more legible to the system. Their passage resembled recognition being established through precedent, testimony, and response rather than an ordinary ruin being forced open.

The Bell Chamber

The great bell within High Stone produces more than sound. Its toll carries recognition outward toward distant, unseen places. The fortress and its Heralds reacted to names, claims, titles, standing, and acknowledged authority when the bell was sounded.

The Bell Chamber marked a decisive point in the expedition. The Infernal Viscount no longer treated the New Founders as irrelevant mortals, though he did not accept them as equals. Something beyond the chamber may also have heard the bell and recorded their presence.

The Claimant's Bier

Beyond the Bell Chamber stands the Claimant's Bier, the final known mechanism protecting the Sigil. It is not a trap in the conventional sense and does not conceal its price. A willing claimant must surrender their life to open the final seal.

Strength, cleverness, and ordinary magic do not appear sufficient to substitute for that forfeiture. The mechanism requires consent, suggesting that the claimant's death serves as more than fuel. It may constitute testimony, succession, payment, or the creation of a binding precedent within High Stone's infernal law.

The New Founders chose not to pay the price. They saw the Sigil beyond the barrier, withdrew from the complex, and returned to Veilmoor.

The Infernal Viscount

The Infernal Viscount is a shadowed figure who displayed intimate knowledge of High Stone and of the New Founders themselves. His taunts and commentary accompanied the expedition through the fortress, and he behaved less like a monster defending a lair than an official observing a proceeding.

The Viscount treated the expedition as a hearing. He appeared capable of interpreting the site's rules and recognizing when the founders' standing changed, but the limits of his authority remain unknown. He may be High Stone's jailer, guardian, administrator, claimant, prisoner, or some combination of those roles.

His title also implies a hierarchy. A viscount ordinarily serves beneath a higher noble authority, while the Sigil is connected to an unknown Marquess. Whether these ranks describe infernal nobility, offices within the fortress, territorial jurisdictions, or roles in a larger mechanism has not been established.

The Sigil and the Marquess

The Sigil lies beyond High Stone's final seal and is associated with an unknown Marquess. Its appearance, full powers, intended bearer, and exact legal function remain unresolved.

What is known is that the Sigil belongs to a wider system of authority. It is protected by procedures involving standing, recognition, precedent, and willing sacrifice. Veyda concluded that it is not the final objective, but one component of something much larger.

Before the expedition, references to the Sigil, the Mantle, infernal jurisdictions, and ancient titles could be dismissed as fragments of Keilious Reverez's dangerous scholarship. High Stone demonstrated that the system is real. It does not behave like a cult, a curse, or an ordinary magical ruin.

It behaves like government.

Keilious Reverez and the Infernal Codex

Professor Keilious Reverez studied the planar and infernal systems surrounding Dawnwake Isle, but his surviving record does not show him reaching the same point as the New Founders. His work indicates that he regarded the underlying project as an aspiration—something beyond even his mortal achievements and a goal he believed he might pursue after becoming a lich.

Lady Veyda Morvayne possesses a surviving fragment of an infernal Codex connected to that research. The fragment appears to be part map, part procedure, and part guide through a network of places where the mortal world borders something else.

The Codex fragment is incomplete, and so is the route it describes. High Stone has already demonstrated that incomplete instructions within infernal systems can be more dangerous than ignorance.

What High Stone Proved

The first expedition established several facts:

  • an ancient infernal system is connected to Dawnwake Isle and the surrounding seas;
  • the system recognizes authority through procedure, standing, sacrifice, and precedent;
  • High Stone is one part of that system rather than an isolated ruin;
  • the Infernal Viscount is real and possesses some form of recognized office;
  • the Sigil is connected to the unknown Marquess and to questions of legitimate claim;
  • Veilmoor's New Founders have become important enough for older powers to record their names;
  • the final seal can be opened by the willing death of a claimant;
  • the ultimate object of Keilious Reverez's research lies beyond the Sigil itself.

High Stone therefore presents a danger larger than any individual devil or artifact. It is evidence of an infernal order capable of measuring mortal authority and incorporating new claims into procedures older than Veilmoor's present government.

Current Status

The Sigil remains within High Stone behind the final seal. The Claimant's Bier has not been activated, and no New Founder has accepted its price.

The current plan is to commission a powerful diviner to cast Legend Lore upon the Sigil before another attempt is made. The inquiry is intended to determine:

  • what the Sigil truly is;
  • what it has done in the past;
  • which authorities, titles, or claimants it recognizes;
  • whether the life demanded by the Claimant's Bier is the only path through the final seal;
  • what claiming the Sigil would grant—and what obligations the claim would impose.

Until those questions are answered, High Stone remains reached but unconquered, its existence known to Veilmoor's leaders but its deepest authority unclaimed.
