The Orc Coliseum is the sacred arena at the heart of Vou-Rock, capital of Orc Island. It is the greatest temple of Vauchy on the island and the central institution of orcish politics, religion, and martial culture.
Description
The Coliseum is a massive stone arena built from ancient foundations and expanded over generations. Its outer walls are carved with clan marks, battle scenes, names of champions, and warnings to cowards.
Inside, the arena floor is covered with reddish sand known as the Blood Sand. Beneath the arena are beast pens, armories, holding cells, ritual chambers, healer pits, and old tunnels whose full extent is unknown.
Religious Role
To fight in the Coliseum is to pray through action. Every major contest begins with invocations to Vauchy, and every worthy defeat is honored.
Priests of Vauchy judge whether a fight was honorable, whether a death was acceptable, and whether a victory carries spiritual meaning. A warrior who wins through cowardice may leave alive but still be judged defeated.
Political Role
The Coliseum is where reputations are made and broken. Clan champions fight not only for personal glory, but for political leverage.
Major political events held in the Coliseum include:
- Overwarlord elections
- inter-clan grievance trials
- champion duels
- war declarations
- victory feasts
- funerary games
- punishment combats
- beast-offering rites
Common Events
| The Seven-Clan Melee | Each recognized High Clan sends champions into the arena. Alliances form and collapse in minutes. The winner earns great honor, but the order of defeat matters almost as much |
|---|---|
| The Beast Offering | A captured jungle monster is released into the arena. Warriors must defeat it without dishonoring the beast or wasting its death |
| The Trial of Red Sand | A rite for young warriors entering adulthood. The exact form changes by clan, but blood must touch the sand |
| The Broken Seat Challenge | A rare contest associated with clan leadership disputes. It may soon be invoked by the Skull Crushers |
