Overview
Scylla is one of the most dangerous servants of Icengrim operating in the Corsair Seas. Once a brilliant human apprentice mage, she was cursed into the form of an Ice Medusa after conducting a forbidden experiment against the command of her master: a vampiric wizard in the service of Lazareth.
Whatever Scylla once was has long since been buried beneath cruelty, ambition, and winter’s hunger. She now serves as Icengrim’s chosen in the region, working closely with the Triad Cult and wielding the terrible Orb of Everwinter, an artifact sent to her from another world.
Her hatred for Lazareth is personal, theological, and absolute. Scylla delights in hunting down Lazareth’s followers, offering them only three fates: conversion, enslavement, or death.
Description
Scylla appears as a frost-blue medusa of haunting beauty and terrible presence. Her skin carries the pallor of deep winter, and her eyes glow with cold arcane power. The serpents that writhe upon her head have pale scales, glassy eyes, and fangs that drip venom cold enough to frost stone.
She often wears storm-dark robes, glacial armor, or ritual garments marked with the symbols of Icengrim and the Triad. In battle or ceremony, she carries the Orb of Everwinter aloft, surrounding herself with falling snow, bitter wind, and blue-white lightning.
The air around her is always colder than it should be. Candles gutter in her presence. Breath fogs. Water freezes along the edges of cups, blades, and wounds.
Personality
Scylla is elegant, theatrical, and merciless. She rarely wastes effort on crude displays of rage, preferring instead to unmake her enemies slowly and deliberately. Her cruelty is not mindless; it is ritualized, intellectual, and deeply personal.
She sees herself not as a monster, but as the perfected result of betrayal, punishment, and divine recognition. Where others might see her curse as a tragedy, Scylla sees it as proof that she survived the judgment of Lazareth and was claimed by a greater power.
She is especially cruel toward worshipers of Lazareth. To Scylla, their reverence for undeath, preservation, and ancient order is weakness. Icengrim offers something cleaner: winter, hunger, silence, and the honest truth that all things must eventually freeze and die.
History
Scylla was once a human apprentice mage of considerable talent. Her master was a powerful vampiric wizard devoted to Lazareth, and under his instruction she learned necromancy, blood rites, forbidden anatomy, and the preservation of life beyond death.
But Scylla was impatient. She believed her master was withholding true power from her, dressing cowardice in the language of caution. Against his orders, she conducted a forbidden experiment, attempting to seize knowledge and transformation before she had earned either.
The ritual ended in catastrophe. Lazareth cursed her for her arrogance, twisting her body into that of a medusa and binding her beauty, intellect, and hunger for power into a single monstrous form.
Yet the curse did not destroy her.
In the depths of her hatred, Scylla heard another voice: Icengrim, Lord of Winter and the Savage Dead. He did not offer forgiveness. He offered purpose.
Scylla accepted.
In time, she turned on her former master, defeated him, and enslaved him. Now the vampiric wizard who once commanded her serves as a chained advisor, prisoner, and trophy of her ascension.
Role in the Corsair Seas
Scylla serves as Icengrim’s chosen agent in the Corsair Seas. Through her work with the Triad Cult, she has begun spreading winter magic, undead corruption, and religious terror through pirate coves, hidden shrines, and isolated coastal settlements.
She, along with other Triad forces, were successful in using a bound Tarrasque to ruin and conquer the elven city of Laz'klennar; where she now rules alongside other senior Triad members.
Her presence is an affront to the natural order of the region. Tropical rains turn to sleet. Warm harbors choke with unnatural ice. Sailors whisper of ships found frozen in place beneath cloudless skies, their crews transformed into frost-rimed corpses kneeling toward a blue triangle carved into the deck.
Scylla’s cult activity often focuses on three goals:
- Hunting Lazareth’s followers and either converting or destroying them.
- Establishing Icengrimite sanctuaries in hidden coves, sea caves, and ruined harbors.
- Using the Orb of Everwinter to corrupt the climate, the dead, and the sea itself.
The Enslaved Master
Scylla’s former master still exists, though few know this. Once a respected vampiric wizard in service to Lazareth, he is now bound in Scylla’s service through a mixture of sorcery, divine winter magic, and personal humiliation.
She keeps him as an advisor, arcane resource, and living symbol of her victory over Lazareth’s order. Whether he serves willingly, bitterly, or under magical compulsion is unclear.
Some rumors claim he knows how Scylla’s curse might be undone. Others suggest he knows the true origin of the Orb of Everwinter and fears what may follow it into this world.
Goals
Scylla’s immediate goal is to expand Icengrim’s influence through the Corsair Seas, creating a network of frozen shrines, undead crews, and Triad-aligned pirate factions.
Her greater ambition is far more dangerous. With the Orb of Everwinter, Scylla believes she can permanently alter parts of the Corsair Seas, transforming warm waters into a frozen hunting ground for Icengrim’s faithful and the savage dead. The Conquest of Laz'klennar would be a key first step in this path; although how other members of the Triad will view this goal is unclear.
If successful, she could create a new power base for Icengrim far from the Winterlands, giving the Triad a foothold in one of the most strategically important maritime regions in the world.
Methods
Scylla prefers terror, corruption, and selective displays of overwhelming power. She does not waste her full strength on every enemy. Instead, she allows stories of her cruelty to travel ahead of her.
Common methods include:
- Freezing ships in place and forcing survivors to choose between conversion and death.
- Turning slain sailors into frost-rimed undead servants.
- Capturing priests, necromancers, and scholars connected to Lazareth.
- Using Triad cultists as spies, smugglers, and assassins.
- Offering desperate pirate captains winter magic in exchange for obedience.
- Leaving petrified or frozen victims as religious warnings.
