Tower of Ascension

Tower of Ascension

Boondoggle!

Description

After the ascension of Torgo and the end of the costly conflict against the Chartist cities, many groups of Gith broke away from the traditional leadership of the Githyanki to form orders dedicated to serving Torgo. Generally, they saw themselves has his mortal instruments dedicated to taking on his burdens now that he himself was bound to the heavens. How this manifests can vary from group to group, but almost always consists of actively working against the agents of Vinnin and The Triad. It is taught that this pursuit of Vinnin's followers on the mortal realm mirrors Torgo's own chase of Vinnin in the heavens. Although not strictly forbidden or unknown for non-Gith to join these orders, it is rare, as it understood among the Githzerai broadly that “Only Torgo's chosen people, the Gith, have the discipline and strength as group to bear these burdens”.

History

  • Founding: Varied, but generally at end of The Blackwake War
  • Power Base: Various remote strongholds and monasteries in The Corsair Seas and possibly the Astral Sea or other parts of the world.
  • Membership: Large numbers of fighting and support members; although an accurate census is unavailable. Often monastic in nature, but this can vary from order to order.
  • Leadership: Githzerai Anarchs and High Priests of Torgo, fairly loose chain of command compared to the more militaristic Githyanki. Some members or groups may go years, or even decades, operating in isolation.

Common Tenets

  • Worship of Torgo: For better or worse, they often see themselves as the “chosen” followers of Torgo. However, Members generally do not seek direct conflict and as a newer group in the world it remains to be seen how this might manifest in interactions with other religious groups or even other Churches of Torgo.
  • Opposition to Vinnin: Dedicated to countering the followers and plots of Vinnin and by extension, The Triad. Many members see this as their primary duty, to take over the task of their Deity in the mortal world.
  • Mental and Physical Discipline: Followers are expected to keep physically fit, active and mentally sharp. Laziness and Sloth are not tolerated.
  • Spartan Lifestyle: Many orders maintain simple lifestyles in order to harden themselves and keep closer to their Deity. Although rarely impoverished, the orders generally see wealth as a means to achieve their objectives, not an end unto itself.
  • Honorable Life: Less universal, but most followers have a dim view of treachery, underhandedness and trickery. It is more common to directly challenge a rival or foe openly rather than plot their downfall in secret. Things like maintaining a hidden base of operations is viewed as a simple practicality rather than an act of deceit.
  • Note: These are just general tenets, the degree to which they are applied may vary greatly between groups or individuals
