Maelis was already one of the youngest Knight-Captains of the Onyx Dawn when the order was nearly broken by a mysterious internal crisis. Almost a quarter of its knights, including most of its senior officers, were exiled or departed in protest to the Well Lands in the west. Because so many ranking officers were touched by controversy, Church authorities determined that a knight untainted by the scandal should be raised above the surviving command structure.

Maelis met the formal standards of the office and was generally well regarded within the order, but her elevation placed her above many older, more natural, and arguably more qualified candidates. To supporters, she was a clean blade at a time when the order needed one. To critics, she was a compromise Grandmaster imposed upon a wounded order.

Her authority was further complicated by the disappearance of Keeper Varnen the Forged, who vanished before formally conducting her private swearing-in ceremony. For years, Maelis led the Onyx Dawn in practice without the complete ritual certainty normally granted to a Grandmaster. Keeper Lythria Starhart finally swore her in during 20 AG, binding her service fully to the Flame.

Maelis has never forgotten the delay. In her mind, it was not merely an administrative omission, but an unspoken rebuke against both herself and the Onyx Dawn.

Maelis’s faith is deeply Rathite. She honors Rath as the Dragon Lord of death, dragons, fate, disease, and war, but interprets Rath through Church discipline: violence must serve duty, protection, and the Keeper’s lawful command. To Maelis, the Keeper is the Flame made manifest in the world. The Keeper’s will is not a matter of courtly preference, but sacred law.

This conviction makes Maelis unusually intolerant of Church intrigue. She can accept battlefield brutality, political necessity, and grim compromise, but she has no patience for clergy who disguise ambition as counsel. In her view, to conspire against the Keeper’s will is to approach heresy.

Maelis’s severity became infamous during the Lazareth Incident, when the Bishop of Lazareth approached her seeking support in “steering” Keeper Lythria away from any possible acceptance of Icengrim worship into the Church’s lawful fold.

The meeting ended with Maelis holding a bloody blade and the bishop short an arm.

Maelis did not consider this an assassination attempt, nor even an act of rage. In her mind, it was a stern lesson: bishops may advise, priests may argue doctrine, and knights may raise concerns, but no servant of the Church may conspire to undermine the Keeper’s lawful will. The incident remains a warning to those who mistake Maelis’s restraint for flexibility.

Maelis has seen the favor Keeper Lythria has shown the Aegis Order, and rather than resent the young, irregular order, she has chosen to support it. The Aegis Order exists to confront corruption, ancient sealed horrors, and politically difficult threats that ordinary armies cannot easily answer. Maelis understands that purpose, even when she finds the Order’s methods irregular.

Where prouder knightly orders might have quietly welcomed the Aegis Order’s failure, Maelis bent over backwards to render aid. To her, supporting the Aegis Order is not submission to an upstart band, but obedience to the Keeper’s judgment. It is also an opportunity to prove that the Onyx Dawn remains pure in motive, loyal in action, and worthy of trust.

Maelis’s most difficult test came during the defense of Dragurfell, the settlement of the Broken Fang Tribe. The Broken Fang are worshippers of Icengrim and long-time enemies of the Onyx Dawn, whose traditional duty has been to repel the mountain raiders of the Wyrmscale passes.

Under ordinary circumstances, Maelis and the Broken Fang would have met as enemies. Instead, the Aegis Order’s mission placed them on the same side against shadow dragons, Far Realm-linked horrors, and corruption that threatened to consume the tribe. Maelis brought the Onyx Dawn to the defense not because old hatred had vanished, but because the Keeper’s will and the Aegis Order’s mission demanded it.

She refused to honor Icengrim rites and made no pretense of friendship with the tribe’s death-god, but she protected the children, carried the wounded, and fought the dragon. Her presence risked open religious crisis among the Icengrim faithful, yet it also created one of the first true battlefield precedents for cooperation between Church-aligned knights and the Broken Fang.

By the end of the campaign, the Broken Fang settlement had survived, two shadow dragons had been destroyed, a portal had been purified, and old hostilities had eased, though not disappeared. Maelis was among those marked after the purification events. She believes her Mark of Sentinel to be a blessing earned through dedication and faith, and a sign that both Rath and the Flame still aid her.

Following the events of the Broken Fang campaign, Titus of the Aegis Order chose Maelis as one of the Dragonmarked companions to accompany Keeper Lythria during the hidden rite of the Keeper’s Vigil.

This selection carried enormous symbolic weight. During the Vigil, Keeper Lythria lays aside crown, armor, title, and much of her divine power, asking to be addressed only as Servant Lythria. For Maelis, who reveres the Keeper as the Flame manifest, the Vigil forced a difficult revelation: the Keeper is holy not because she stands above all others, but because she willingly bears the burden of service.

To Maelis, being chosen for the Vigil was more than an honor. It was a sacred trust from the Aegis Order, the Keeper, and the Flame itself.

Maelis is generally even-tempered, controlled, and professional. She does not rage without purpose and does not confuse cruelty with strength. Her discipline is severe, but it is discipline nonetheless.

Her greatest flaw is certainty. Maelis has difficulty distinguishing between sincere concern and disloyal scheming when the Keeper’s will is involved. Her years leading a wounded order, combined with the scandal that elevated her, have made her hypersensitive to hidden corruption within the Church.

Despite this, she is not bloodthirsty. She protects civilians, honors courage, and respects soldiers who hold the line even when they stand beneath hostile banners. Her compassion is expressed less through softness than through duty: the wounded are carried, the children are guarded, and the monster is killed.

The Benediction is the sword of Maelis’s office and a relic of the Onyx Dawn. Its name reflects the order’s grim doctrine: mercy may be extended, warnings may be given, and repentance may be offered, but judgment comes when defiance has exhausted grace.
