Tower of Ascension

Boondoggle!

Overview

The Greyrum Consortium is a newly founded business, research, and investment organization based in the deep agricultural levels of Zhuf'ganus. Established by Thyrdk Greyrum, a recently returned son of the hold who made his fortune abroad, the Consortium represents a bold challenge to the old noble order. What began as an ambitious effort to modernize mushroom farming has quickly expanded into arcane engineering, fungal alchemy, deep-road logistics, magical infrastructure, and experimental manufacturing.

To its supporters, the Greyrum Consortium is proof that Zhuf’ganis can thrive without surrendering its independence or traditions. To its critics, it is a dangerous concentration of new money, foreign influence, and unregulated research. Thyrdk presents the organization as practical, patriotic, and necessary: a way to make the hold wealthier, safer, and more self-sufficient. Yet few doubt that the Consortium’s reach now extends far beyond mushrooms, machinery, and trade contracts.

Operations

The Consortium has expanded significantly in just a few years. Improving Mushroom farming techniques along with other agricultural advancements. Recently its investments have spread far beyond this however, funding new arcane research, trade expeditions, experimental manufacturing.

Thyrdk himself in interesting the Mushroom farming projects; but generally leaves the day to day operations to other “more interested” members of the group.

The Consortium would never willingly engage with an obviously nefarious party, especially when it comes to arcane research or powerful new developments. However, nor do they fund projects for charity alone. Every investment must have a reasonable potential for profit per Thyrdk himself.

For every successful project and expansion of the Consortium's influence, there are whispers among the noble houses that “something needs to be done about this”; although nothing has come to a head yet.

Example Project Description
The Riverwheel Arcane Dynamo A massive water-driven generator built along the third level’s underground river, designed to convert current, pressure, and rune-motion into stable arcane power for laboratories and workshops.
The Bluecap Yield Initiative A fungal agriculture program meant to breed larger, tastier, and more nutritious mushroom crops. Early results were promising, though some test beds began glowing faintly under moonlight.
Deep-Road Lantern Contracts A public infrastructure project to install long-burning crystal lanterns along dangerous sections of the Gold Road and lesser under-roads. Several noble houses objected to the Consortium controlling the maintenance keys.
The Fourth Level Compost Modernization Works A deeply unglamorous but profitable project to improve waste recycling, fungal substrate production, and agricultural yield. It is one of the Consortium’s most reliable money-makers.
Moon-Mirror Relay Towers A network of polished silver, crystal, and moonstone signal devices meant to send coded light-messages through curved tunnels and across sealed districts. First major collaboration project with Kron'ganus. The clergy of Brian cautiously approves.
The Reclaimed Warrens Survey An archaeological and industrial survey of old goblinoid-held tunnels on the third level. Officially, the goal is to assess structural safety. Unofficially, the Consortium is looking for forgotten resources and sealed machinery.

Thyrdk Greyrum

Founder of his namesake organization in Zhuf'ganus

Greyrum is a wealthy returnee from the Corsair Seas. His fortune, connections, and willingness to invest in unorthodox ventures have made him one of the most talked-about figures in modern Zhuf'ganis. So far, he has proven adept at this, his holdings and wealth have only expanded since his return to the hold.

Before founding the Consortium, Thyrdk was a one time First Mate aboard the The Emerald Wake, where he racked up a fortune in captured ships, cargo, signed trade contracts and lucrative adventuring rewards. He later left under sour terms with his former crew, cashing out his holdings and assets, and returned to his home with almost unimaginable wealth.

To his Dwarven counterparts it appeared that Thyrdk left a pauper, only to return barely a year later with a mountain of riches, powerful connections, and a large Mushroom plantation prepared for him by an unknown benefactor.

He presents himself as a practical farmer-investor with a deep love of the hold. His rivals consider this absurd.

Rebecca Mason

Thyrdk's former companion from his time in the The Corsair Seas. She followed him back to Zhuf'ganus after they were both slighted by their former crewmates along with the unchecked rise of Bruce the Black. Although lacking the obscene wealth of Thyrdk, she also amassed enough gold to live a boring noble life herself, but thought working with Thyrdk would be more rewarding and exciting.

Rebecca was saved by Thyrdk from Triad experiments on Lost Island; where she was unfortunately the only member of her family to survive. She then joined the crew of the The Emerald Wake as quartermaster until she left with Thyrdk to return north.

She now functions as Thyrdk's Lieutenant in business matters. She is eager to prove herself to him and also works to keep investment gold out of nefarious hands. This was motivated by witnessing the slow corruption of Bruce, as well as suffering directly from the cruelty of The Triad.

After sometime back in Zhuf'ganus, Thyrdk extended a marriage proposal to Rebecca, as she was “a nice enough girl” with “a good head on her shoulders”. Rebecca readily accepted. If nothing else, this solved two practical issues. First, it allowed Rebecca to become more accepted among the insular society of Zhuf'ganus. Second, it prevented other noble houses from proposing an “endless tide” of political marriages; which Thyrdk found annoying. To outsiders, Rebecca clearly dotes on Thyrdk after their journeys together; only they know if this is requited.

The Lightning Train

The newest and boldest project undertaken by the Consortium. The Lightning Train was developed by Dwarven Engineers and Deep Gnome arcanists from Caeruleum. The Train functions by using linked Lightning Runes and the native Faerzress of the Underdark to propel large “cars” of cargo and passengers along a set path at significant speed.

The noble houses of Zhuf'ganis, already bothered by this upstart organization, would only allow the construction of a prototype train if the lions share of any profits were routed to them. Furious, Thyrdk refused to give these nobles “a single clipped copper” and dispatched Rebecca, under the guess of agricultural research, to the The Underdark - North to search for alternatives. It was here that Rebecca encountered the nescent Aegis Order. After Consortium Engineers constructed The Aegis Fort, she proposed, and was able to convince, the Order to allow construction a prototype train there. She was certain that this Church-aligned order would not abuse the technology, and if this annoyed the noble houses back home, so much the better.
