The Troll Forest is a dense coniferous woodland of dark pines, meltwater streams, rocky hollows, and isolated clearings. It takes its name from the several communities of trolls that have lived within the forest since the War of Emberlight.

During that conflict, the trolls were granted safe harbor in the forest in exchange for serving as mercenaries. Their descendants continue to live under this ancient compact. Although individual clans possess considerable independence, they are expected to keep the forest roads open, avoid attacking neighboring settlements, and answer calls to defend the surrounding region.

The Order of the Emerald Bow regularly patrols the forest and maintains several fortified holdfasts along its trails. The most prominent of these is Meltwatch Holdfast, whose knights and rangers mediate disputes, monitor dangerous creatures, and maintain relations with the troll communities.

Among the largest troll settlements is Meltroot Hollow, a sheltered community built around ancient roots, stone outcroppings, and warm springs. Outsiders are permitted to enter only with the approval of its elders or under the protection of the Emerald Bow.

Despite the longstanding peace, the Troll Forest remains dangerous. Predatory beasts, wandering monsters, territorial trolls, sudden thaws, and the deep forest’s poor visibility make travel away from the patrolled trails extremely hazardous.
