Wellspring is a small but rapidly growing settlement built around a dependable cluster of cold subterranean springs. It lies near the cavern routes connecting Aegis Fortress, Fort Nightshade, and the scattered farmholds of the Northern Underdark.

For most of its history, Wellspring was an isolated agricultural and road community. Its clean water, defensible location, and nearby growing chambers made it a reliable stopping place, but it was too distant from the major roads to become an important market. That began to change after the restoration of the Aegis Order and the reclamation of the nearby fortress.

Wellspring is now the closest established civilian town to Aegis Fortress. New homes, storehouses, workshops, inns, and animal yards have appeared along the road between them. Despite this growth, Wellspring remains noticeably less formal than Fort Nightshade. Its streets follow old water channels and farm paths, and many of its oldest buildings are practical stone homes cut directly into the cavern walls.

History

Wellspring was founded by farming families, hunters, waterkeepers, miners, and travelers who gathered around the springs. The settlement grew slowly, supporting nearby fungus beds, root vaults, cave fisheries, and small livestock holdings. It remained a place known primarily to caravaners and the people living along the lesser northern roads.

The Wellspring Crisis

In 20 AG, a series of disappearances and unnatural disturbances frightened the settlement. The newly restored Aegis Order was sent to investigate. Its first field cell traced the danger to an abandoned fortress nearby, where a Far Realm portal and its guardians had taken root.

The portal was sealed and the fortress reclaimed. The event became the first major success of the modern Aegis Order and ended the immediate threat to Wellspring. The former ruin was subsequently rebuilt as Aegis Fortress.

Recovery and Growth

The presence of a powerful, active bastion changed the region more than any formal decree. Patrols became more regular, dangerous routes were cleared, and isolated claims gained somewhere nearby to seek aid. Merchants who once avoided Wellspring began treating it as a dependable market and supply stop.

The population has since grown through the arrival of farmers, craftsmen, caravan workers, builders, and families employed by the expanding fortress. This growth remains recent and uneven. Older residents remember when every household knew the others, while newer districts increasingly resemble a busy frontier town.

Government and Society

Wellspring is recognized as a chartered settlement of the Thronstadt Commonwealth, but retains substantial control over its daily affairs. The Wellspring Council is selected from local households, farmholders, waterkeepers, tradespeople, and other established interests. A Commonwealth clerk maintains formal records and serves as liaison with Thronstadt, but does not ordinarily govern the town.

The Aegis Order protects the surrounding region without administering Wellspring. Its members may assume emergency authority when dealing with corruption, portals, dangerous relics, or similar threats, but ordinary law remains in local hands.

Religious life is similarly practical. The Church of the Flame maintains a modest shrine and charitable presence, while Brianite way-shrines, household altars, and the traditions of immigrant communities remain common. Wellspring residents generally judge institutions by whether they keep the water clean, the roads open, and predators away from the outer farms.

Economy

Activity Local Importance
Water and Cisterns The springs support residents, travelers, fish pools, irrigation, and emergency water stores for nearby claims.
Agriculture Bluecap, palecap, root crops, cave fish, grubs, and other dependable foods are grown in surrounding chambers.
Aegis Trade The Fortress purchases food, ordinary tools, animal feed, labor, laundry, repairs, and civilian supplies from Wellspring.
Caravan Services Inns, beast pens, guides, warehouses, chandlers, and repair shops serve traffic moving through the region.
Construction Masons, tunnel workers, haulers, and engineers are increasingly common as both Wellspring and Aegis Fortress expand.

The town benefits from Aegis spending but is not entirely comfortable depending upon it. Local leaders encourage agricultural and caravan trade so that Wellspring does not become merely a service settlement attached to the Fortress.

The Lightning Train

The Lightning Train is expected to become the next major influence on Wellspring. Engineers and surveyors have begun examining an extension from Aegis Fortress through or near the settlement, with the possibility of continuing toward other farmholds and northern trade routes.

No permanent station has yet been completed. Survey stakes, test cuts, equipment sheds, and temporary worker camps currently mark the proposed route. The Wellspring Council is negotiating over station placement, water access, freight fees, worker housing, defensive responsibilities, and compensation for displaced farms.

Supporters believe a station would make Wellspring an important agricultural market and transport junction. Skeptics fear rising land prices, outside control of local trade, and the possibility that a poorly placed line might carry traffic past the town rather than into it. Almost everyone agrees that the railway is likely to change Wellspring, even if no one yet agrees what it will become.
